H.R.H. Prince Abdullah Al Saud Bin Metab

The love of horses is rooted deep in the psyche of most Arabs, and particularly so in that of the ruling family of Saudi Arabia. HRH Prince Abdullah has inherited this love of the noble breed through his grandfather, HM King Abdullah and his father, HRH Prince Miteb who was responsible for the King’s stables. His uncle, Prince Faisal bin Abdullah has been instrumental in building and shaping the sport of show jumping in the Kingdom, and with the strong support and encouragement of all his family, the young Prince is now reaching the pinnacle of his equestrian career.

HRH Prince Abdullah’s academic career was not neglected, and he graduated in Law in 2006. But from a childhood competing in pony shows, to adulthood and major international success, he has lived and breathed horses – more often than not living in accommodation beside or above his mounts so as not to waste a moment that could be spent riding.

As a youngster HRH Prince Abdullah spent two summers with Stephen Hadley (a renowned trainer and BBC show jumping commentator) in the UK and in 2002, made his first tour of Europe. He consolidated his training in learning from one of the greatest – Nelson Pessoa. Fellow teammate, Khaled Al Eid, has also been a huge influence, taking him under his wing and helping with his training up until 2006.

In 2006 he began a two-year stint with Henk Nooren, and soon saw the beginning of a string of top class wins, including three World Cups. The year 2007 saw him teamed up with the bay gelding, Obelix (more properly Mobily Ashkur Allah Obelix), and placed second in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. In November the same year he completed a double gold, individual and team, at the Pan Arab Games in Cairo. In December 2011 he and his teammates HH Prince Faisal, Kamal Bahamdan and Khaled Al Eid won the gold medal at the Arab Games in Doha – all four jumping clear in the first round.

Obelix, now a 15-year-old, was sold to Jose Larocca (though the Prince follows his progress as an old friend), and he then acquired the bay gelding, Allah Jabek. Their notable successes include winning the 2009 Grand Prix in Belgium and placing second in the French Grand Prix.

The Prince trains every day at stables at Rambouillet near Paris, often seven hours a day, a schedule which requires fitness and focus. The competition arena is a great leveller and no respecter of person: once in the ring there is only rider and horse, nowhere to hide and no favouritism. HRH Prince Abdullah has no illusions about this nor about the grueling work required to reach the top, and spares no effort to achieve his best for team and country.

Although not formally part of Saudi Equestrian until relatively recently, he has always been willing and able to join the team “at any time, at any moment”. His family ties are strong, his aim in life is to make them, and his country proud, not only in London in 2012, but in whatever he does.

Okie is a striking 15.+ hh mahogany bay, no white. Purchased as a 6 month Old in Oklahoma, he is a grandson of Lord Appleton.

As a 2 year old, Okie won his age class at the Alberta Morgan Horse Show; with this win, he defeated the 2 year old Futurity winner (not eligible to show in Futurity.)

As a junior horse, he shone in the western & hunter pleasure divisions. Hes been ridden & shown by both his Amateur owners, with Sherry making her debut at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan horse show in 2004 with Okie as her mount.

In 2006, Okie returned to the ring in the In-Hand Division. He garnered 2 championships, and 1 Reserve Championship. These wins were exceptionally sweet, as his son, KSG Waltz After Midnight, was reserve champion on both occasions that he was champion.

Driving was added to Okies list of accomplishments in 2006. He showed off his beautiful way of going in Pleasure driving classes, and demonstrated the versatility of the Morgan horse at our Open Barn in June, taking a spin around the cones course.
